Yoga and Pilates for Kids! Ages 4-7Sundays, 11:15-11:45am with Rikki Alrutz, Certified Pilates Instructor, Certified Yoga Instructor May 26, June 2, 23, 30, July 14, 21, 28 3 consecutive weeks: $33 (inc. CT tax) PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED Boys and girls ages 4-7 are invited to attend a very special Yoga and Pilates class created just for them! Rikki will spark their imaginations, as they travel into relaxing lands. As they express themselves through movement they will be learning enjoyable and healthy bodily positions. These will stretch and strengthen their growing muscles, teach them breath and body control, help them relax, and improve their sleep. Children will experience firsthand the many benefits yoga has to offer, while playing, laughing, and working together in a non-competitive, relaxed group atmosphere. Space is limited PILATES with the FOAM ROLLER June 2, 12:30-2PM Have you ever seen long foam objects stacked in your fitness studio or gym? These foam rollers are tools that can be used to release knots in muscles and surrounding fascia, increase blood flow to these areas, and break up scar tissue.This workshop is in two parts:The first part will teach the basics of foam rolling. Besides reducing muscular tightness, such techniques often help to prevent and heal headaches as well as improve sleep.The second part will combine a traditionalPilates class with foam rolling. The exercises are designed to help students gain insight into specific areas of tightness and imbalance as they challenge balance and stamina. PILATES MAT CLASS with the MAGIC CIRCLE June 30, 12:30-1:45PM This class will be a traditional Pilates mat class that will incoroporate the Magic Circle,Joseph Pilates’ invention, in every exercise.Using the circle adds resistance to the movements, thus allowing students to know where their bodies are in space as well as providing neuromuscular feedback.The circle promotes toning of the back, chest, legs and arms. Circles are available at the studio, but if you have one, please bring it with you. PILATES with BANDS July 14, 12:30-1:45PM This class will be a traditional standing and mat Pilates class that will incorporate the use of resistance bands in every exercise.Pilates fundamentals will be taught while using bands of different lengths and resistance to challenge students’ stability, and core strength. Everyone will get a powerful physical workout! PILATES on the PORTABLE REFORMER! July 28 12:30-1:45PM Are you curious to try a Pilates class on the famous Reformer, but haven't had the chance, or the money? In this class, we will use a portable piece of equipment that allows us to simulate traditional Reformer exercises in a small space where we do not have access to multiple Reformers. We will move through a series of Joseph Pilates' exercises by to lengthen and strengthen the body. The class emphasis is on rhythmic, flowing sets of movements, which increase strength, flexibility, and stamina as they improve alignment, balance, coordination. It is a great workout too!
Yoga Flow: Iyengar AlignmentThursdays, 7- 8:30pm, through May 23 with Madeleine Hexter, Certified Iyengar Instructor Class Card applies for entire series or individual classes; Drop-ins welcome All levels, beginners welcome In this course we will explore theSun Salutation by doing it, breaking it down pose by pose, understanding the alignment of each pose, and building on that understanding. For those of you who do flow and want to learn more about alignment this is the class for you. For those of you who are familiar with alignment-oriented yoga and wish to flow from one pose to the next, this is the class for you. For those of you who are new to yoga this is a good place to start as well.
Iyengar Yoga for the Monthly CycleThursday, May 30 7-8:30pm with Madeleine Hexter, Certified Iyengar Instructor Class Card Plus, or Class Card + $4, $21, Drop-in $21 (inc. CT tax) All levels; no yoga experience necessary. Handout included It is highly beneficial for women to practice specific yoga sequences during their monthly cycle, whether they suffer discomfort or not, as a way to maintain long lasting health, and to honor the rhythms of nature. In this class students will learn a basic pre-menstrual and menstrual sequence they can practice at home; The sequence is very effective in alleviating abdominal cramps, backache, headache, exhaustion, and irritability. Attendees do not need to have their period the day of this workshop.
Summer Nights' Cooling Yoga for Sleep and Hot FlashesThursdays, June 20 & 27 7-8:30pm with Madeleine Hexter, Certified Yoga Instructor Class Card Plus, or Class Card + $4, $21, Drop-in $21 (inc. CT tax) All levels; no yoga experience necessary Madeleine will lead students in a sequence of poses designed to cool the body and ease the mind so that they can fall asleep, and stay asleep. The Cooling Sequence has been found to be a particularly effective way to ease the effects of hot flashes and insomnia. This two week session gives students two opportunities to integrate the sequence into their muscle memory. However one time participants will benefit as well. Handouts will be available so that you can repeat the sequence in your home practice.
Feldenkrais ®Awareness through Movement: Healthy BackSaturday, June 29 2-4pm with Uwe Mester, Certified Feldenkrais Awareness through Movement® Practitioner $35 (inc. CT tax) SPACE IS LIMITED: Pre-registration with payment holds your place Uwe will teach a series of Awareness through Movement® lessons that will relieve stress and strain in your back. In this workshop you will learn the basic movements of the spine (Flexion, Extension, Side Bending and Rotation) and how you can use them to reduce or eliminate pain in your back. You will learn and experience how to move your spine the way nature intended. Uwe himself experienced years with extreme back pain, which even a back surgery (disc removal) did not remedy, so he can relate to the pain and misery that back pain creates. The Feldenkrais-Method, with its gentle and easy movements, helped him to understand the root of his back problems and how to apply this knowledge into his daily life. You do not need prior Feldenkrais® experience to enjoy this workshop. Yoga for a Healthy Lower BackSaturday, October 19 2-4pm with Liz Owen, E-RYT 500 $65 includes complimentary copy of Liz's book and CT sales tax ENROLLMENT LIMITED: Reservations required Are you one of the 31 million Americans who experience lower back pain? According to the National Institutes of Health, lower back injuries and conditions are second only to the cold as a reason for a visit to the doctor. If you think about all the work your lower back does throughout your day, every day, it’s no wonder that it is so vulnerable to injury and strain. In this workshop you will explore your own lower back through yoga postures and breathwork. You will learn gentle, safe movements to stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak ones, how to cope with pain flare-ups, and how to create natural tone and balance while respecting conditions and limitations. Owen’s knowledge of yoga philosophy brings mindfulness and depth into your healing journey. Open to students of all levels – come and soothe your sore, achy back! Liz Owen is co-author with Holly Lebowitz Rossi of Yoga for a Healthy Lower Back, Shambhala Books, August 2013. Liz was on the faculty of the BKS Iyengar Yoga Center of Greater Boston from 1990 – 2003, and was a Certified Iyengar Instructor for fifteen years.Currently she teaches weekly classes in Arlington, Massachusetts at The Arlington Center for Movement, Meditation and Wellness and at First Parish Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is on the faculty of Wellesley College. She teaches workshops throughout New England. She is co-author of an NIH-funded study at Boston University Medical Center studying yoga as a healing modality for depression and anxiety. She has presented workshops at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Wellness, Yoga Alliance Leadership Conferences, and at Yoga Journal Boston Conferences.
